BG3: “The Eye of Jupiter”

Tonight’s episode is the last of the year, before we take a break for a few weeks. It’s been a great run so far, but the second half of the season will be on a slightly more relaxed schedule — more like “Season 2 Stress” — a welcome change from the incredibly tense first months of Season 3.

In this episode, Chief Tyrol discovers a holy temple on the surface of the algae planet. The music cue for this particular moment was especially challenging.

First, we had to lure Tyrol into the temple and this called for haunting, almost subliminal, chimes and bells that he thinks he hears. Using glass harmonica, glass marimba, vibraphone, tines, celeste, tibetan bowls and anything else we could get our hands on, we created an intricate, layered chime effect.

BG3: “Unfinished Business”

On any other television show, it would be hard to believe that a “boxing” episode would be among the most intimate, lyrical, dynamic or emotionally involving stories of the season. As usual, Battlestar Galactica continues to surprise: this week’s episode is all of the above.

BG3: “Hero”

When I first watched this week’s episode, it was clear from the beginning that the score would require new musical ideas. The story centers around Danny “Bulldog” Novacek, a pilot long left for dead who mysteriously returns to the fleet and immediately raises suspicion within the crew.

BG3: “Torn”

The World Premiere of “Battlestar Sonatica!”

“Torn” is the first episode in Season 3 to truly move on from the New Caprica storyline and take us into uncharted territory. The insights into the inner workings of Cylon society are reminiscent of the revelations in Season 2’s “Downloaded,” but this time around we get to see the Cylons in their own environment.

BG3: “Exodus, Part II”

They don’t get any bigger than this!

“Exodus, Part II” is epic enough to be a season finale. Hell, even a SERIES finale would be lucky to get an episode this jam-packed with frantic battle sequences and powerful story resolutions. But no, on Battlestar Galactica, we’ll do it on episode FOUR just to keep you on your toes.
